HERITAGE WEEK 2024

Memory Pathways: The Many Uses of West Cork’s Oral Heritage by James Furey

(Mac Conmara Heritage Consulting)

For Heritage Week 2024, the West Cork Oral Heritage Group held a public event to showcase the planned development of a digital platform for our material and the potential uses of this new resource.

The event was based on a Heritage Council-funded project (2024) to develop a new digital platform for the sharing of material recorded by WCOH. Jamie Furey, on behalf of Mac Conmara Heritage Consulting, spoke about the curation and dissemination of oral heritage material across the country and its application in the context of WCOH. James Furey is a digital heritage consultant who has worked on several major cultural projects including Circular Tales and Catching Stories on behalf of UCC.

The Heritage Week Event organized by WCOH aligned well with this year’s Heritage Week Theme, ‘to explore the traditions and practices, knowledge and skills passed down through generations.’ On 18 August, from 7 pm – 8 pm an illustrated talk was held, reflecting on the ongoing work of WCOH. The
presentation was made by Dr Tomás Mac Conmara, Oral Historian Project
Consultant, in addition to WCOH committee members. The event involved sample audio from previous recordings that were played and discussed in a comfortable and enjoyable environment.
